The Vinography blog notes that wine growers in Italy are having a tough time because of a locust plague, as reported in The Independent in London.
Australian growers are also having a tough time for the opposite reason: they have too many grapes. The Australian reports that despite a healthy vintage this season, the wine industry is floating between success and catastrophy, according to grape growers.
The report comes on the back of the Senate inquiry into the wine industry over a whole lot of guff including the aforementioned glut.
The bad news is that grapes are being left on the vine. The good news is that prices could soften and we could see more cleanskins in the shops. But cleanskins have lost their way. Who wants to pay $15 for a bottle of unbranded wine? $10 yes, but $15?
The only amusing thing to come out of this is the spokesman for the Clare Region Winegrape Growers Association. You guessed it, Trent Vine.
