Food blogging arrives in Melbourne

by Ed on October 25, 2005

Finally The Age in Melbourne has bought into the food blogging story. Naturally the famous bloggers Chez Pim and Clotilde at Chocolate & Zucchini are mentioned.
Food blogging is much bigger overseas than in Australia so it makes complete sense that they should draw attention. And, hey, blogging is a global thing.
The Age managed to chiver out two of the Melbourne food bloggers Very Good Cooking and Niki at Esurientes. They missed yours truly (well, I’ve only been serious since September, have to serve my time and was rude about the paper’s Good Food Guide), Cat on a Bench and Crazy Gaijin at nihon no ryori who I think may be from St Arnaud in Victoria.
If I’ve missed any others from the bleak city, please let me know.
In the rest of Australia, Saffron at The Food Palate (Sydney) and Anthony at Man that Cooks (who I notice has a link from Pim) rate a mention. The Australian Food Bloggers ring was there but its architect Augustus Gloop at Grab your Fork was not.
While we are talking about local food bloggers, who was the first in Australia? What about compiling a wiki on the scene?

They missed a few of my other favourite Melbourne bloggers: My Favourite Plum & A Few of My Favourite Things. As well, there’s Kitchen on Clarendon and Lychee Rose and Peaches. There’s links to them all on my main page.
When I started just over a year ago I was convinced I was the only Australian foodblogger. I may well have been; I haven’t checked the archives from other sites, but I certainly wasn’t aware of any others, and felt pretty alone, forging ahead without Aussie precedent! It’d be interesting to know if there were any others at the time I started.

Excellent I’ll check them out. not everybody is a member of the Aussie Bloggers Ring.

Looks like the interview from a few months back wasn’t trashed after all. Thanks for linking all the sites :)

Looking at Grab Your Fork, it seem I certainly wasn’t the first Aussie fodblogger; hers predates mine by a good 5 months, and that’s only the first one I’ve checked!

Thanks, Niki!

Yes, I was surprised not to see AG’s blog there too. I was sure that she’d been around for AGES. Well, mine is kinda recent – I’ve only been around since July.

Maybe I just feel the oldest but I think I was, July 2003.

Do I get cheap bus rides?

It was great that some Aussie bloggers finally got some well-deserved column inches. I’m more mortified that The Age, not the SMH ended up doing it (cue Syd v. Melb rivalry now).

And no, I haven’t been around that long. The first Aussie food blog which prompted me to start was Pinkcocoa’s but hers started in Oct 2003. So you win Anthony. Should we expect a recipe for stewed prunes sometime soon?

Gourmet Traveller will be next!

Once I decide whether I’m Gandalf or James Brown.

Ed Charles October 28, 2005 at 4:36 pm

Go Gandalf!
