While there’s debate going on at Slashfood on eating squirrels, I thought I’d add a few marsupials to the pot. When the late Auberon Waugh (son of Evelyn as in Brideshead Revisited) was visiting Australia he was bitterly dissappointed over what he wasn’t served at dinner:

” My only dissapointment in the first Australian experience was that although my hostess, Senator Amanda Vanstone arranged a great kangaroo banquet for me in Adelaide, she was unable - in fact refused to try - to produce a koala for me to eat. I don’t think I want to try a dingo or a wombat, although a platypus might be more interesting, I never saw one rather doubt whether they exist”

This was taken from Will this do?, his autobiography. My own first hand research indicates that Kangaroo is like Venison, Bat’s are a bit gamy. Has anyone out there tried any of the others?Waugh’s second visit to Australia, pre blogging in 1988, was to act as a supernumery wine judge at the Sydney Wine Show. Apparently, after a mammoth tasting everybody had a hangover. I’m sure we’ve all had those.
