Weekend herb, cat and chicken blogging

I should be in the McClaren Vale wine region in South Australia. But I cancelled because J is ill so I’m shifting compost and large chunks of wood from A to B at the Vegout working bee. And I’m also weekend herb and cat blogging, all in one entry.

I take time out for some maintenance on my two basils and remind myself that I must cook with the purple variety.

Since it’s time for Weekend Cat Blogging, and the dogs and I caught this cat on my veggie batch last week, I thought I’d chip in. The good thing about the cat is that it keeps the rodents away. This is the first time ever that my young bean shoots haven’t been gnawed away and we may actually have a crop.
Now the cat is waiting for mice to run out as we turn the compost.

Sadly, I haven’t beeen a diligent gardener for the past year I’m not in with the mafia so I’m not getting freshly laid eggs. A task for this year, perhaps. Anyone up from weekend chicken blogging?

Your cat is REALLY going to be indignant now :)

No, it’s not mine but down at Vegout. Sad as I would like one in the front garden.

Clare, I just need to catch him in a photogenic moment. I’ll probably have to placate him with sashimi grade tuna. Plus I get accused of being just a bit too geeky if I WCB too often.

Sorry you did not get to go away. But gardening is also fun (at least to me it is). Your basil looks just amazing. I grow basil from seed every year, sometimes as much as 40-50 plants, and then I put the basil leaves in the food processor, drizzle in a tiny bit of olive oil, and pulse a few times, then freeze in small containers. It’s a perfect way to get a bit of fresh basil flavor in the middle of the winter. I think I still have a couple left. Must go make something with basil!

Wonderful photos. Am looking forward to digging in the dirt and basil is on my list!

Kalyn, how big is your garden o have 50 basil plants. My plot at Vegout is I think 8 sq m which is less than 50 sq ft. Luckily basil seems to grow year round here.

Thanks Fran – get digging.

Oh, that basil is making me so jealous! It’s beautiful. Here in Seattle we can’t count on planting it outside until around May and then, if we’re lucky, it might last into October. I plant several pots of it so that it’s always handy right outside the back door. Like Kalyn I also freeze it but it’s just not the same… I’m very jealous that you get it all year!

You know, I really miss cold winters. But that’s the luxury of being somewhere where its always mild. Frozen is better than nothing. i think you can freeze it in ice cubes whch can simply be defrosted. have you tried to kee a plant indoors on a sunny window sill, taking advantage of the greenhouse effect?

Wonderful pics! Everything looks great! By the way, I love your basil, tomatoes and mozzarella post below.

I trust that J is feeling much better and you’ll have another chance to go away.

Weekend chicken blogging? I like the sound of that! Take another pic for next week!

If you click on the Flick tile there are more chicken shots and some of the gardens they live in. There is one chicken I really fancy that I must try and grab a shot of for next weekend.
