Hmmmm…should I even contemplate buying wine in Singapore airport. A couple of Batard Montrachets at about S$230…plenty of Petrus…the usual posh but sadly overpriced stuff.
Take the excellent grapefruity Shaw & Smith M3 2004 Chardonnay which in Australia costs about A$38 (about S$48). In the airport it costs S$69. What the hell is happening? I was under the misconception that stuff was meant to be cheaper in duty free.
And by the way, why such a clichéd selection of wines available in Australian airports?
Anyway, the noodles are decent enough on Singapore Airlines. Another 3 hours and Hanoi!
Must dash…
Should I buy wine at the airport (at double the price)?

Hell no! They charge a bloody premium here for wine – duty free or not. I remember a wine class I attended where I was told that the government puts so many licence fees, taxation and what not on wines that a $13 wine will become a $30 wine in Singapore. It’s rubbish and seriously getting in the way of my goal to be a dissolute alkie.
I know it’s crazy. A friend of mine who is addicted to Aussie reds lives in Singapore. As a humble journalist I don’t know how he manages it (although I know his wife is weening him on tos omething that doesn’t dye his teeth).
