Germany Of course, the country that hosts the Octoberfest is going to have great beer. It also has the run of the mill as well. DAB and Bitburger are perfectly acceptable and I’ve tasted a handful here but really prefer a Pils (the pity being that Austria with Trumer isn’t playing). The showing was average and Germany didn’t have to try hard in this round. There are many excellent beers to field such as Uerige Altbier, Radeberger Pils. I can’t list them all. It’s enough to say with this country’s history of beer making they are a favourite. It’s their home turf. An easy winner. I’ll be sourcing some more local brews for later games.
Costa Rica Beers are fairly light. The Pilzen is probably the best at 4.5 per cent abw. According to Realbeer.com it is light-bodied and carbonated and has a hop flavour starting strong then finished subdued. The Bavaria, at 4 per cent abw is light-bodied and punches a malty flavour. Imperial at 4 per cent abw is well carbonated, and has a light hoppy flavour and an even balance. Apparently, the beer industry is dominated by Coca Cola (Cervecería Costa Rica) and Pepsi (Cervecería Tropical 3.9 per cent, a light hoppy flavour and no after taste). The prognosis was never good.
BEER WINNER: Germany
