Contrary to my expectations banana vodka, served in a beautiful cut crystal glass, is very good at Borsch, Vodka & Tears (173 Chapel St, Prahran +61 9530 2694)

But what is most special is the absinthe (aka the green fairy) ritual here. The liqueur is poured from an antique receptacle to a glass in which a spoonful of sugar is tipped. Then our waitress sets fire to it. It really is quite spectacular and I am told that, to date, none of the clientele have caught fire.

Food fascist

1. If you don’t want a hangover you should really avoid the green fairy

2. Ditto banana vodka (even Anthony Bourdain favours the premium brands. And he’s a man’s man – not gaythough our readers keep asking about that)

3. Your annoying boss may catch fire if doused with vodka prior to the fire ritual

4. Remember Bailey’s is really for children, also causes a really bad hangover and makes you fat.

I thought absinthe was illegal ? Can you buy it in liqour stores anywhere? Does woolies have it on special ?? :)

Yes, its available anywhere and lot illegal anymore - or poisonous for that matter. It’s even at Woolies. So remember go to Woolies so you can put your local botle shop out of business! (PS: Appologies my link to you wasn’t working for a while and - coincidence- you came along as I sorted it out.

In truth I haven’t set foot (to my knowledge) in a major liquor store for a long time. Liquor Land and Woolworths liquor scream mass produced crap to me… Fortunately I’ve got Steve’s Bottleshop which has a massive selection of small vineyard Aussie wine, and a fair amount of Premier Cru french stuff (I don’t buy it, but i like to hold the bottles every now and then… ) and La Vigna, home of all sorts of great eclectic Italian stuff I can’t pronounce.

I’m gonna have to go looking for absinthe now though.

I have renamed the green fairy the reflux fairy as each time i have had it - well…the worst GERD ever.

I haven’t had banana vodka but in london my housemate plied me with her homemade banana wine one evening. It was dry and potent. No reflux, but will make you see double.
For a week!

Banana wine! You can’t be serious. (Tell me about the reflux. I’m Myanta’s best customer right now)

Hi Matt, sorry both you and AOF were in my junk filter (soon I will work out how to install Captcha). Nothing like rubbing a bottle of premier cru, eh.
