The inside guide to eating and drinking in Melbourne. Since 2005.

Yes, this flourless chocolate mousse from Monsieur Truffe at Prahran Market is very bad news for the weak-willed.

The cheese that should have been in my shopping bag Two weeks ago this cheese should have been in my shopping bag. I saw it being sliced at a well known and expensive deli stall in Prahran Market. I paid near $60 for it and a dozen other items. The woman who serves me comes [...]

A very nice pie I thought I’d been eating to many meat pies. That’s the working class variety. You know, the ones made with the gunk molested out of cow remains shortly after it’s become cat food. That’s the run of the mill kind of pie that licensed bandits sell at football grounds across Australia. [...]

While the wild wind and rain hammered St Kilda on Sunday, once again Neil over at Food for Thought and I had one of those weird mind melds where we end up blogging pretty much the same things. This day I was mooching around the famous cake shops of St Kilda. So was he. In [...]

There is a god. And he provides a horizontal spit of lamb barbecued over white hot coals. This is what makes Lambs on Spit (245 Malvern Road, South Yarra, vic 3141 +61 3 9826 8201) the best late night kebab in Melbourne. Drop in and you may just find the creative director of the Melbourne [...]

With astroturfing being a theme among food bloggers over the past week or so, it’s time I took you to a brothel. Sorry, not brothel but Madame Brussels, a bar named after a famous brothel that operated in Melbourne in the late 1900s. With its astroturfed, kitsch garden theme Madame Brussels (Level 3, 59-63 Bourke [...]

Ingredients 1 sheet frozen puff pastry A few marinated olives Two ripe tomatoes Fetta cheese (Greek is still the best) Olive oil and seasoning 1 egg yolk Today I shan’t be rolling out puff pastry. Life is too short and the frozen stuff, I hate to say, is pretty good. It makes this recipe cheap, [...]

Check out what Matt from Abstract Gourmet had to say about spammer chef Benjamin Christie, the guys at Food Blog S’cool (FBS) and what Sam from Becks & Posh said in May 2005. We have a repeat offender.

It all starts with what seem like friendly emails. A friendly invite to link to or visit this or that post. But if you click through on “celebrity” chef Benjamin Christie’s links it soon becomes clear his matey correspondence is a cynical attempt at marketing. And who is Australia “celebrity” chef Benjamin Christie anyway? As [...]

STOP PRESS: Lau’s does now take bookings due to popular demand and a few walk in seats are kept vacant. It is worth bookiung earlier than later. Saturdays, in particular, fill up fast. A new restaurant needs to be put in context. For Lau’s Family Kitchen (4 Acland St, St Kilda 3182 +61 8598 9880) [...]

The whole tapas thing has become ridiculous. My personal low point was when a once much loved restaurant on Fitzroy St reopened serving Italian tapas, tapas, of course, being Spanish for bar snacks. Within a few days the concept was retired, although I’m not convinced that the whole italian–Indian food match is any better. And [...]

Wet your knickers. Yesterday (Sunday) the Jamie Oliver road show arrived in Sydney with an entourage of about 20 so-called mates. He’s here for the launch of Fifteen Melbourne, which opens for trade Thursday 20th September. It opens for bookings on the 13th or 14th (when the reality TV show first airs on Channel 10) [...]

Busy, busy, busy. What I need is a quick and easy recipe with both veggies and meat. One of my favourites is Gajar ka salad, a Gujerati carrot salad from my very stained and food stippled copy of Madjur Jaffrey’s Indian Cookery. It is an excellent candidate for Weekend Herb Blogging over at Kalyn’s Kitchen. [...]
