There is a god. And he provides a horizontal spit of lamb barbecued over white hot coals. This is what makes Lambs on Spit (245 Malvern Road, South Yarra, vic 3141 +61 3 9826 8201) the best late night kebab in Melbourne.
Drop in and you may just find the creative director of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Matt Preston, with grease and chilli sauce dripping down his chin judging by the newspaper clipping on the wall.
The innovation is the cooking process where a proper barbecue style rotisserie is used over coals in preference to a vertically oriented contraption using an electric fire as the heating element.
There are several other Lambs in the vicinity, but this is the only one – just up the road from Hungry Jacks – with the hot coals.
Incidentally, I recently passed another Lambs on Lygon Street with a similar barbecue configuration. Could be worth a visit.

My days of late night drinking and kebab eating are a bit behind me now, but my work ball is this Friday, and mixing overworked employees with free booze is always interesting.

If the kebab is that good though, perhaps it warrants a visit whilst sober?

The Lambs on Lygon is nothing special. Its great though after a few beers.

Ellie, I’ve eaten them sober and they are good but the key is to eat on premises. The kebabas are pu ito a plastic bag which means they sweat and go soggy.
