Two separate reports in two days: Mini, Basement 141 Flinders La Melbourne +61 3 9650 88300), which I raved about back in May, apparently isn’t that good any more. Rather than the food, this Friday the highlight was a large white bottom pressed against, Mini being in a basement, it’s high windows.
Could it be going through that phase of food complacency that often hits these joints after a bagful of great reviews? I’m also told the bottom service is haphazard, only offered once in a blue moon.
I should return to see what’s happened but, as I pay with all my own money, I really can’t be bothered.
Next please.

Unfortunately, I have been to mini twice and also found the service barely acceptable ( wrong dishes and wine bought to our table), original dishes ordered were not avilable ( red mullet ) and even the dessert of greek doughnuts was totally inedible as the dough was undercooked.

It certainly did not give me hope of returning. However, after dismissing modern greek as a bit of a gimmick and thinking the only good greek food available is in a basic format a la Jim’s Greek tavern, last night I went to Press Club for the first time, and was blown away.

Haloumi skewer shots, Soft shell crab, and the dish of the night for me was the braised lambs neck on roast potato puree was sublime. The service was also very impressive and the wines by the glass ( we drank Greek Agiorgitiko from Nemea in the Pelloponese) .

We chose the basic “Kerasma” menu (degustation of 4 appertisers, 5 mains & salad) which at $55 per head was exceptional value and left us more than satisfied.

Get in before the reviews becuse securing a table will be very hard !
Congrats to them can’t wait to go back.

Cheers Jim,

This is almost exactly the same story i heard about Mini yet it’s marked 14.5/20 in the Good Food Guide. We ate the sam at The Press Club. Great food and wine and superb value or money.
