Sure you could go to Grill’d in Acland Street for an organic burger. Or, if really hangover try the low fat burger – the worst burger I have encountered – at Maccas.
If you are in the know though, you’ll be popping round to the corner of Acland and Barkly Streets to Danny’s (164 Barkly St, St Kilda 3182 +61 9537 1453).
Yes, you heard right. Danny’s, the Fitzroy diner famous for making the best burgers in Melbourne since 1945, has opened in St Kilda.
The café previously on this corner was always a hang out for local down and outs, disenfranchised taxi drivers, alcoholics, drugs addicts and the girls who ply their trade on the local streets.
And know you’ll find food snobs like me there because the burgers at Danny’s diner are inspired. The lamb burger comes on a toasted sesame bun with chopped onion, tzatziki and a slice of cheese. for $6.50. The beef burgers – the double lot with egg, bacon tomato and egg at $7.50 – is everything you want.
And you can even phone your order in.

The prices here seem very reasonable , especially compared with some of the other gourmet burger chains around at the mo. Will have to keep this place in mind. Have you tried th other burget place on Fitzroy st…called urban burgers or something?
I don’t know urban burgers but will seek it ot to compare. I know BBNQ were I was put off by a burnt fat smell and The Gourmet Burger Co – where the burgers were expensive, too large and collapsed – closed. The great thing about Danny’s is tht the burgers are the right size and construction so they don’t fall apart.
Tried it for the first time when we were back in Melb in Feb – simple but so delicious.
And the price is right too.
YUK!
Delicious….
Anyone tried Andrews burger in Albert Park? I will have to say it is one of the best as well!
Since I wrote this post I have. VG.
Well all I have to say is to go try the burgers at Flipp’s on Glenferrie rd Hawthorn. (near Barkers rd) The best I have ever had! They have %100 organic Beef and Lamb burgers…YUM!
Um… what?
Am we all talking about the same place here!?!
Danny’s in Fitzroy is fantastic – and although this place may share the same name, that’s where the similarities end!
The burgers here are rubbish…
I’ve given it several chances…worst fkn burgers I have ever had without a doubt. complete sh$#t!
Now all they need is an iphone app to put the order thru! yum!
Great burgers but slow service and grumpy staff
Where do I start? I drive past Danny’s Diner on the way home from work 6 nights a week. I saw pasted on the windows that Matt Preston from the TV series Master Chef voted their burgers number 1. So I thought I’d take my girlfriend and try this number 1 voted burger by a guy who’s “supposed” to know food??!! From the moment we walked in the door I felt unwelcome. The two guys behind the counter almost seemed inconvenienced by our presence. They couldn’t be bothered with a hello or G’day but rather opted for a very dismissive nod of the head! We ask if they had EFT facilities and he says no, so we walked down the street to get money all the while excited by the thought of trying these number 1 voted burgers!! We walk back in and were greeted by the girl at the register who was nice enough and pleasant enough. I ordered the Double Lot and my girlfriend ordered the lot and we got a larger bowl of chips to share. With two drinks we paid $28.50. Then we waited. After about 10 minutes the chips arrived shortly followed by our number 1 voted burgers???!!! They present your burger on a little bread and butter plate and the burgers are cut in half. First of all who cuts a burger in half? You want to be able to grab your burger by both hands and just muck in!! My girlfriends burger buns were cold the meat patty was barely 120g and was hardly any lettuce in it. The tomato was thinly sliced. The egg overcooked. The saddest yet most important part of any burger is the patty! The only way to describe it is mince with absolutely no seasoning flattened to within a inch of it’s life and slapped on to the hotplate. It had no flavor apart from the bloody after taste it left in your mouth. The patty was dry and nothing about it tasted fresh. It’s the sort of burger you’d to buy from a tuck shop that has them pre made and sitting in a hot baine marie. For the price they charge for these burgers the patty, in my opinion, needs to be thick and busting with flavors like onion, salt, pepper, worcestershire sauce cooked medium to medium well. On the upside the chips were nice.
This is the number 1 worst tasting, overpriced burger in the area as voted by Chef Mr.G. Matt Preston is a hack and has absolutely no business reviewing and critiquing food!!
Chef Mr G,
I haven’t eaten there in a long while as I had a couple of bad ones. I’ve found that anywhere Matt Preston recommends can often end up being a bit dodgy – Pellegrini’s for one is terrible to either drink coffee at or eat in.
It would be interesting to conduct a scientific study of the places he likes. Thanks commenting and updating us on Danny’s.
Safe if you want a burger that you won’t be dissapointed with – truth be known that I was more impressed with the chips than the burger. My partner (who loves Danny’s) refused to belive that Andrew’s Burgers were better. I finally convinced him to try Andrew’s Burgers, and they got his blessing. Andrews Burgers are better than Dannys in size, taste and texture, however Dannys chips are better. Also I live right near Dannys so it is a lot more convenient.
Mr G. You sound like you own Grilled on Acland (or some other local Cafe). They are clearly the best and as voted by the readers of The Epicure. 300 places nominated and Danny’s comes up number 1 with more than 30% of all votes( 2nd and 3rd combined didn’t have as many votes as per the article). Majority rules bud. Sorry but my girlfriends and i will continue to enjoy the best ‘cut in half’ cheeseburgers (and chicken burgers) in Melbourne. Go Danny’s in St.Kilda
I agree with Amelia (Mr G must own a local competitor). My Experiences are the exact reason my mates and i will continue to go to Danny’s in St.Kilda forever. From the warm welcome to the last bite of my bacon and cheese burger. What a place. It’s a godsend (and better than the other one too). I have also read and completely agree with the article. Danny’s No 1 burger. Majority Rules Buddy ! (the Steak Sandwiche’s are awesome too)
Mr .G where do I start..What a horrible experience! Sounds too unbelievably bad to be true!! Now let us understand this, your saying the burger shop VOTED no1 by the ‘people’ in a survey conducted (not influenced) by Matt Preston is the worst and most over priced burger you have ever had. Infact comparing it to a truck stop. Clearly your motivation for the feedback is personal. Let’s deal in some facts. The meat and produce are fresh daily. 100% Australian beef, A grade veg, free range eggs, quality short rindless bacon, Heinz tomato sauce is what you would find on any burger with the lot for $7. Chicken is free range, Steak is grained fed Australian beef aged and dried 160 day’s. These are all clearly advertised on boards at the shop for all to see. I’m certain customers are confident that they will receive Melbourne’s Best Burger when they come into Danny’s and pay little or no attention to the dribble you wrote. Danny’s will continue to Provide our customers with the best possible service and quality food forever. You need to find a better way to promote your business rather than knocking others. Try what Danny’s has been doing for years, serving quality food with quality service. That’s why we will alway’s be number 1. Sorry buddy like the majority, not buying what your selling.
I must say I have had variable experiences at Danny’s again. That survey in The Age is being used devisively as it was the original Danny’s that was voted for and the St Kilda shop wasn’t even open back in – what was it? – 2005. That’s six years ago.
