Where I eat

by Ed on February 27, 2007

Welcome if you’ve arrived here after reading my column in the Herald Sun. I thought I’d share some of the local places I visit regularly in and around St Kilda.
If you would like to receive regular updates from this blog you can subscribe to an email above (although this could be annoying if I’m posting regularly).
The alternative is to subscribe to my RSS feed using one of the feed readers whose logos you can see on the right.
If you’ve never used one of these before just click on a logo and it will tell you what to do.
A feed tells these web-based services when a website has been updated and are a useful way to keep track of interesting sites.

Coming soon: Review and pictures inside of Mirka at Tolarno

Baker D Chirico (149 Fitzroy St St Kilda 3182 +61 3 9534 3777)
Bread, doughnuts, pastries, coffee and more bread.

Bala di Dhaba  (56-58 Glen Eira Rd Ripponlea 3185 VIC +61 3 9523 8683)
Serves the best curries in Melbourne and it reminds me of Indian restaurants from back home in London. Friday nights cars circle Ripponlea waiting for takeaways. it is best to eat in if you are eating from the Tandoori oven. Great dhal and eggplant curry.

Balas (1c Shakespeare Grove, St Kilda VIC 3182)
I usually try to avoid anything in a bain marie but when I need to eat something at my desk I grab a quick takeaway from here. I enjoy Dhal, ginger rice and the beef vindaloo.

Cafe di Stasio (31 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, 9525 3999)
Lots of people moan about the service but is nothing wrong with it apart from being cheeky and I like that. Everything is good here and the $30 set lunches are worth it. I find them the perfect size.

Cicciolina’s (130 Acland St St Kilda 3182 +61 3 9525 3333)
Now it is non-smoking the back bar is a hidden treasure of Acland Street. the Italian food here is more rustic than elsewhere but good value. No bookings, part from I recently discovered lunchtimes.

Clamms Fast Fish (141 Acland St 3182 +61 3 9534 1917)
Fish, deep fried with chips at home with Heinz tomato ketchup. (Or for fresh fish, especially tuna, on the rare days I’m being good)

Danny’s (164 Barkly St, St Kilda 3182 +61 9537 1453)
Just for non-organic basic burgers.

Dogs Bar (54 Acland St, St Kilda 3182 +61 3 9534 3075)
Well poured Becks or a glass (who am I kidding, a bottle) of pinot gris.

Dragon Room Chinese Fast Food (Cecil St cnr Coventry St, South Melbourne)
For takeaway lunch: the dark luminous red (where can I get nail polish that colour?) sweet and sour pork with fried rice.

Il Fornaio (2 Acland St St Kilda 3182 +61 3 9534 2922)
I’ve just returned from a dog walk, a coffee and a dangerously good – heart stopping – voluptous jam doughnut.

Mart 130 (107a Canterbury Rd, Middle Park, Tel +61 3 9690 8831)
This place is a good dog walk away for Saturday morning breakfast or Thursday lunch when the cleaners are in. I know, I’m not a yummy mummy or a super model but I still enjoy it here.

Melbourne Wine Room (125 Fitzroy St St Kilda 3182 +61 3 9525 5599)
Pre or post cinema or just for the heck of it, this place is great for a mid-week drop for a glass of wine or a feed. Drink soave and eat chicken schnitzel with Italian coleslaw. (See Mr Wolf wine group comment)

Mr Wolf Bar (9-15 Inkerman St, St Kilda 9534 0255)
I tend to sit in the bar rather than the restaurant. The pizzas are damn good but it is the salads that stand out. It also has an excellent European skewed wine list and I should probably declare I’m in a wine group with Marcus who buys the wine.

Spuntino (56 Acland St St Kilda 3182 +61 3 9525 4322)
I’m in for coffee almost everyday. The java is always good here but look out for Pierse. He’s 18 years old and has been making coffee since he was ten. He’s to Acland St coffee what Tiger Woods is to golf.

Termini (60 Fitzroy St St Kilda 3182 +61 3 9537 3465)
The fact that this place always bustles on this fickle corner of Fitzroy Street says something. Great value set lunches.

Trampoline (85 Acland St St Kilda 3182 +61 3 9534 9007)
I’m collecting those large metal pencil case style cases from Trampoline and usually go for the pear, chocolate and sesame.
