Ed, I was the same about the exhibitors, and hadn't consequently been for a few years. On sunday we went on a whim and bumped into friends. I was actually quite surprised by the improvement in the quality of goods at Werribee, admittedly some of the producers I regularly buy from at the farmers markets were there, but why not?

Gone are the restaurants touting their business and there was a marked increase in wineries and boutique breweries offering good drops. Plenty of small ventures pooled resources and shared tents this time. The event was smoothly run with no traffic issues and there were adequate facilities in the way of public conveniences and drinkable tap water available.

As for the collecting moula upfront, I don't organise anything without money down first. It comes of running my own underground dining movement in the past. It's sad to think how unreliable people can be unless they are well and truly goaded into committing by their peers...Human nature I guess.

Sticky, sounds like an idea but you'll need to get money upfront as inevitably there will be no shows. I've been to a few of these picnics but must admit I'm a bit off these types of events as i find there is too much emphasis on the commercial side. Though some of the food and drink is good a fair amount is not.

I was at The Harvest Picnic yesterday and an old friend reminded me that nearly 20 years ago, I used to hire a 15 seater bus and drive a bunch of us there. The next Harvest Picnic is at Hanging Rock on February 24 and perhaps we could do this as a gathering - no cooking required though picnics and eskies can be brought along to share? Tickets for groups of ten or more are $14ea and the money goes towards raising the profile of local producers. Not sure how much it costs to hire the vehicle, but should be economical when split per head, and allows for wine tasting and bloggers sans wheels to attend. Could meet up somewhere central for the 45 minute drive.
(I'll post this at the FlickR discussion thread too)

Have to say guys the food looks fantastic, good to see all you bloggers showing much flair in the culinary skills. Ed, well done for organising the whole shibang, would've loved to have attended, next time me and the missus will tag along, if that's ok...are industry types (i.e. non-bloggers) welcome? As long as we bring a bite? Although Ed, I have to say, you're shirt has confounded my graphics card and it's now on strike in a Francais stylee...my solicitors will be in touch ;-)

The whole thing is pretty special though, imagine all the 'dead media' food folks doing something similar...John Lethlean bringing obscure vintage Chorizo, Matt Preston, his favourite curry a la on a budget, Stephen Downes with his linen and pinkie...nice thought though somewhat unlikely...vive Les Bloggers...excuse my bad French.
