There’s four different types of mangoes in Coles. Over a dozen types of quality processed meat, mostly, Spam. And more prawns than you can point a stick at.
The strange thing about traveling is the differences of choices reflecting local produce and conditions. At Vintage Cellars the demand is for expensive champagne and heavy, high alcohol red wines judging by what is on the shelves. I can only find whites in a small fridge tucked away in the back of the shop and I can count the unwooded wines on one hand.
Here real men drink something called XXXX Gold, a mid-strength alcoholic beverage that I can’t bring myself to call beer. Nevertheless, I’m forced to drink the stuff.
Later in the loo I’m pointing at what looks like a bicycle lamp that seems to be leaking blue battery fluid.A roll of scented-quilted-dolphin pattern printed loo roll causes a rash in an unfortunate place.I’m guessing that given the choice, you wouldn’t have wanted to hear that. The thing is, there aren’t terribly many choices up here.

Let me count the reasons why I left the state of my birth!
oh dear!
hope that you are at least enjoying the waterviews.
Stephanie, there is promise though – an Illy cafe has arrived although he’s still on training wheels.
Cin, we enjoyed the drizzle and cloud and at least I improved my aim.
Oh come on the supermarkets are not that bad up here and I don’t know of anyone that buys spam or drinks XXXX. Maybe up in Cairns? Besides we have quite a few really good farmers markets to get cheap and amazing fresh fruit.
You’ll find most Gold Coasters drink the southern beers (considering most people have moved from Melbourne or Sydney) such as VB or Carlton Draught. Did you get to the Ferry Road Markets in Southport? If you’re after suggestions on restaurants up here then check my blog and website. We went to Songbirds last weekend at Mount Tamborine and it was amazing – it won regional restaurant last year.
Yes try Ferry Road markets good produce at a price! Have a coffee there at the Merlo coffee shop flavoursome coffee that is not bitter.
Dinner at a little French place called Champagne is worth a visit kind of quirky in the glitz of the Gold Coast!
The markets in Cairns has rambutan and mangosteen at no-second-mortgage-needed prices! Yum. The supermarkets are embarrasingly limited.
And I recall seeing a funny sign on our way up to Port Douglas at a random supermart: white bread on special $1.99 for two. Price of the exact same product for one: $2.50. Placed conveniently right next to each other. These QLDers been out in the sun too long.
