Make that two months. And I haven’t included the screwcaps. Or the beer. Or the spirits. Oh dear.
Anyone game to name them all? Don’t worry too much about the vintages.
Three years ago I went on a boozy winery tour with a busload of artist mates. Somehow along the way I managed not only to buy two small olive trees, but also two magnificent French oak wine barrels to plant…
There’s a rumour that Melbourne hospitals lay on extra staff in the Emergency Department at this time of year. Yes, it's tomato season and given our vast migrant population, there will invariably be a few home-bottling and canning disasters. Every Italian…
Making yoghurt at home is really simple and doesn't take much science. Here we make two different styles of yoghurt using both cows' and goats' milk.
It took four hours of a Saturday afternoon to construct this gigantic pie.
The recipes available are all pretty similar, three different types of pork with herbs and spices surrounded by jelly and encased in a hot water pastry. This one…
There's a lot of meat and fat in a pork pie including the hot crust pastry which is made with lard and butter.
I bought a whole tub of dripping, which is basically like lard (pig fat) but from beef, as…
Five days later and the bacon is cured. Salty and sweet, with a hint of juniper and sage, it was worth it.
Nothing is ever easy for me. Frustrated by the poor quality of filling and pastry in local pork…
We don't see much innovation in cookbooks nowadays but The Family Meal: Home Cooking with Ferran Adria is as you'd expect from one of the world's most innovative chefs.
What most…

One of the most exciting chefs to be in town for the Sydney International Food Festival was the witty and erudite David Thompson. If you aren't familiar with Thompson, the…
I recently had a non-brush with death while eating what turned out not to be my last meal.
It made me think of all the meals I'd wasted. A bad…

It's 3.50 on a Friday afternoon. I've just finished a great meal cooked by Scott Pickett at The Point in Albert Park…

not a bad effort, from what I can see:
6 x Wynns somthing or other
6 x Some french thing
2 x Port Philip (pinot?)
1 x 04 Roda
1 x Telmo Altos de Lanzaga 05
2 x entry level telmo (LZ or Dehesa Gago or Basa?)
1 x Quinta do Ameal
1 x Gugal cotes du rhone
1 x Scopo (Rose?)
1 x Roulot bougogne
1 x 06 Agro de Bazan Amber
And some Brown Brothers, perhaps an Orange Flora & Muscat for the ladies, a Pieropan Soave, as well as a decent sav blanc (Sancerre).
Ed,
I’ve been fretting about my alcohol intake of late, it’s comforting to know that I have company. Goodonya…as they say.
Did you have the Quinta at St Jude’s or Bar Lourinha? Nice drop.
(ponders whether 10:20 is too early to have a wee sip of Alvaro Castro…)
Davy, its never too early…
Good god that is a lot of wine. I thought 2 bottles each on the weekend was too much. I feel better now
Dave, if there was a prize you’ve won it. Scorpo was a pinot. 2 x roda – 1x reserva. Pinta Toro 2003 (average for the price).Brown Brothers Riseling
Neil, BB RieslingI think for the laddettes who drink too much Chablis and Albarino – Grazaban.
Davy, I drank them at home, quite possibly alone and quite possibly awoke with spittle running down my chin. 10.20 perfect time for a Castro Martin.
Ran, try two a night. Did I say that?
There is a reason I throw the corks in the bin, photos like this!
Good to see a lot of Spanish gear in there. Yep, 04 Pinta is disapointing for the price, the 04 is a bit the same. You’re better off spending the extra $30 on Alion.
Sounds like me, slippery slope, but it’s a nice ride on the way down.
Reminds me of a couple of lines from that great Scottish (and ginger) miserablist Malcolm Middleton, the song’s called Blue Plastic Bags…
“The whole world’s going home with blue plastic bags/Six bottles of Stella, Jacob’s Creek and twenty fags.”, substitute the alcohol with your tipple of choice. He cheerily goes on to cement the concept with “Staying in is the new going out”.
A bottle and a half of the red stuff later and I’m heartily singing along, fishing about in the plastic bag for my fags.
(Alcohol and fags are a recurring theme in his songs, god bless ‘im)
