Today it is four years since I started this blog and decided to update my list of the top food and drink bloggers in Melbourne. Out of the 80 or so I listed two years ago about 46 survive. The others have either moved interstate or abroad or just stopped.
The list here is any blog that has updated in the past six months. I’ve also included some commercial food and wine blogs.
I’m certain that some blogs have been left out or some dates may be wrong. Please leave any I’ve missed in comments and I’ll update this post.
in the meantime, why not enter my competition to win one of ten Vietnamese BBQs.
It looks like food blogging may have peaked in 2007, a year in which they got a lot of publicity. Perhaps now people take the easy option and turn to Twitter instead.

Happy Blog-birthday Ed. Yay! I’m one of the oldest blogs! 5 years soon, I must really remember to have a proper blogbirthday post finally, lol.
xox Sarah
What a fabulous resource! Thanks for putting this together, Ed – lots to add to my already overflowing RSS reader.
Hope you’re celebrating the occasion with a nice, grassy NZ sauv blanc.
Ed how long would you give a blog since the last update before you declared it dead? About half from two years ago still exist, but how many new ones have appeared? If it has peaked as you suggest, has growth significantly slowed? Are old sites closing faster than new ones are opening? While I think that Twitter has a place, I don’t think it can replace extended critical or analytical writing, especially when photos and videos are included.
Thanks, Sarah. You should have a big blog birthday. 5 is massive.
Injera, ha ha. I think I missed you and added you in too.
Brian, giving six months since last update is arbitary. Sometimes people don’t update for a year or more. To do this properly we really we really need a dynamic list that updates.
I just wonder that some people who have have started blogs instead get sucked into twitter because it is so much quicker and easier.
Hey Ed, I think this trend matches up on blogs in general.
I’ve noticed that many of the other blogs I once followed have disappeared too.
I think part of it has been due to Twitter/Facebook (eg: other social media platforms), and the other is due to changes in personal circumstances (eg: change in working conditions etc).
Or just found the time required to commit to regularly updating a blog with no financial incentives to get boring after awhile.
Oh, and if you’re still adding to your list. One Melbourne based food blogger that I’ve subscribed to that isn’t in your list is Mel Bedggood – http://www.melbedggood.com
Also, Nourish Me have moved their blog to: http://nourish-me.typepad.com/nourish_me/
Hi Ed,
Thanks for the inclusion of secondhelping on your list, although in it’s infancy compared to many of the others it’s great fun to do and will continue to develop. Your link to it doesn’t seem to work though
cheers
Joanne
Thanks for a very useful list (and thanks for including Green Gourmet Giraffe) – I feel a little shame at how few Melbourne blogs I visit – will use this to try and surf around a little more if I can find some time – keeping up with other blogs is a time consuming occupation but does turn up wonderful gems
Hello Ed,
good list of blogs going there. maybe you’ll have a look at mine; these things are always in their infancy.
by the way, if you need a driver for next years melbourne food and wine festival, give me call.
Tim
Here is one you missed
http://passingjudgment.blogspot.com/
jun-09
Will, thanks for those two. I guess it is social media clutter isn’t it – getting in the way of blogging. I’ve also noticed less commenting and posting on blogs probably caused by the same.
Joanne, no problems. The challenge is to keep at it.
Johanna, I feel the same and am now going to update my feed reader.
Tim, always my favourite driver. Perhaps I could book the lunch and the lift in now? Welcome to the blog world.
Marek, thanks – updated.
Now I just have to find the time to read them all… I love that there’s so much good stuff out there!
Thanks for putting the list together Ed (and thanks for having me on there- though the link does not seem to work?).
I’ll be forwarding it to all my lovely foodie friends who are boycotting twitter in favour of more ‘in depth’ reading! Cheers!
What about Tummy Rumbles? It is bad enough that Matt Preston rips off Mel’s writing style in his weekly column, but even worse for her and EG (Dan) to miss out on your list of food blogs.
JdG link fixed – an http was missing.
Ken, no slight on Tummmyrumbles – they were on my spreadsheet but somehow dropped off. An accident which has now been righted.
The bastard copying them.
Hi Ed,
Can you add my one to the list. It’s still in it’s infancy.

Cheers,
Andrew
Thanks heaps for compiling such a comprehensive list, Ed, as well as for including me on it (not long ago I would have failed the 6 month rule!).
Love reading your blog – it’s my most-regularly-read Melbourne food blog.
x t
I can give you the start date of Guide to Vic Markets – January 2007.
Don’t think I see it on the list but you should include Food Lover’s Journey by Anh
Well, happy birthday to the tomato.
And now…I am going to have to sit down and read through them all. Admittedly, I am probably through half of them. This comment is just a break between opening new tabs.
Tammi, Welcome back. I guess the salami helped.
Haalo, I would have but I think she is now based in Sydney based on her Google profile althoughmost of it has been dedicated to Melbourne. A flaw in these lists.
Thanks Jess, I still have to get through them. Too much time compiling them…
Lordy…so many of us.
Happy Blog Celebrations to youse, Mr Ed.
Thanks Will for making note of mine! I’ve not been updating as much due to a few things going on (bought a house etc), but I’m planning on changing that shortly.
Ed, I like the idea for Melbourne based bloggers – I might start some links with this. Oh and the first one will be you of course!
Happy 4th blog-birthday!
Great work to put up a list! It is interesting to see the list grow and then peak and drop down again. I would expect that it would continue to grow! 2009 is still young though!
P.S. My site doesn’t seem to link correctly!
Thanks everyone.
Rilsta, sorry I missed part of the address pasting it in. Fixed.
Hi Ed,
Great resource.
I think that I Eat, I Drink, I Work’s start date may have been Dec 2007, not Dec 2008 – there are entries from earlier – http://ieatidrinkiwork.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8087&Itemid=85.
Hi
I have two blogs that I started in 2008 -
http://greedygourmand.blogspot.com/ &
http://absolutelyfamished.blogspot.com/
It would be awesome if you could include them on your list.
Thanks
Chanel
Hi everyone, I’ve just realised that with my spam protection turned up a bit high a few comments were sucked into Spam – I’ve saved some but if you comment hasn’t appeared and you have links for other blogs try again and I’ll ensure I check more often and turn down the spam filter for a while.
Congrats. Happy 4th bloggiversary!
Does that mean I need to create the Sydney version? lol.
Congratulations on birthday Ed. Great list. I didn’t realise there were so many blogs in Melbourne.
Thanks for the listing Ed – much appreciated. I hope to still be blogging in 4 years time!
Great list! Looks like lots of delicious reading to add to our list.
Hi,
Could you please add Happee Monkee to the list?
http://www.mabletan.com
Great compilation btw. We should organize a Melbourne blog get-together (sign me up if it already exists!)
Cheerios!
Mable
Hey, not sure if we count as a food blog as far as your list goes because we grow the food rather make/serve or eat it. But we do supply a fair bit of Melbourne and we are about great food. We are at http://www.daylesfordorganics.com
This is a fairly comprehensive list. I may have take the next few days to have a look at them.
I’ll update all the blogs I missed. Thanks everyone for contributing.
Hi Ed,
I’m very new to this game – in fact though I’ve been planning it for a while I only just started my own food blog about a week ago – I already have 3 posts though!
I could be included as Melbourne’s newest food blog – at least for a very brief time
If you want to check it out I’d love you to
http://www.eatitgood.blogspot.com
Cheers
Thanks for including me in your list. It’s a great honour.
Cheers!
Wow – such a long list!
Now we need to tally all the top food places from each blog!
Hi Ed- big props for including me in your list. Thanks.
FYI I’ve moved to a new URL: http://foodrehab.com.au/
Keep eating,
Adrian
Hi tomatom,
Trotski & Ash started in July this year and is still going strong.
Thanks for picking us up on the radar!
x Trotski!
Hey Ed,
Great site…just letting you know we have moved our humble little site to its bigger and better home:
http://alleylife.com.au
Thanks for including us,
Macca
Hey there, I write for a Melbourne-based food blog called Eat, Drink, Stagger.
We’re brand spanking new, having only started in mid Dec 2009 but would love it if you could add us to the list.
http://www.eatdrinkstagger.com
Cheers, Gem (@snarkattack on Twitter) / @eatdrinkstagger
what about me

Hi Su-Yin – Unfortunately the list is only for food bloggers currently living in Sydney or NSW. Has someone done a list for KL/Malaysia? I’m sure the list is much bigger than ours!
Hi Chocolatesuze – You’re not old, just a trend-setter. lol
Hi Simon – It is quite interesting to watch the blog list grow as the years go by!

LOL I’m starting a count of how many photos you have of my arms (so far 2 or 3?). But yay to my featured limbs in the 1st pic haha.
Awesome job Helen and you got it done so quick! All hail Chocolatesuze, the queen of Sydney Food Blogs

One newish Sydney food blog to add to your list:
"How to Shuck an Oyster", written by novelist Charlotte Wood, started in March 2009.
